Exploring beautiful Budapest
Exploring beautiful Budapest

In 2018, my husband and I had a wonderful river cruise experience with Avalon Waterways. We chose their “Legendary Danube” itinerary that began with 3 nights in Prague, and followed with a 7 night cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest.

Prague is the capital and largest city in the Czech Republic. Fortunately, Prague was spared the destruction of the World Wars, and today is nicknamed “a city of a Hundred Spires.”

Our first day in Prague we toured Prague Castle which is the official office of the President of the Czech Republic. It is the largest castle complex in the world, and has more than 700 rooms. Within the complex is the St. Vitus Cathedral. This is the largest church in Prague where former Czech kings are buried, and home of the Czech Crown Jewels. From here our tour continued to “Old Town” to see the 600 year old Astronomical Clock which draws thousands of tourists everyday. In the evening, we enjoyed a folkore dinner show at the restaurant U Marcanu with a traditional Czech meal, beer, wine and dancing.

The following day was free to explore the city on our own. We took the metro to Wenceslas Square which is the “New Town” of Prague. This area is a long boulevard which is now their main shopping district with many upscale shops, cafes, and evening nightclubs. As a farewell to Prague, we treated ourselves to an evening dinner cruise on the Vltava River.

From Prague we had a 3 hour motorcoach ride to Nuremberg where we boarded our vessel the “Avalon Impression.” While in Nuremberg we toured Kaiserburg (Imperial Castle), and stopped at the local farmers market where we enjoyed their traditional gingerbread cookies.

Our next stop was Regensburg which is the only German city not bombed during World War II. We took a guided walking tour of the city, which ended with a delicious lunch at the “Old Sausage Kitchen”, one of Germany’s oldest restaurants. After lunch we decided to walk over to the Regensburg Cathedral. Their Sunday Mass was just coming to an end, and we were thrilled to able to hear their official choir the “Regensburger Domspatzen.”

The following day we docked at Passau, and motorcoached to Salzburg Austria for their “Sound of Music” tour. Our walking tour included Mozart’s birthplace, the Love Locks pedestrian bridge, and Mirabell Gardens used in the filming of the Sound of Music. We rejoined our vessel in Linz, as we continued on to Melk.

In Melk we toured one of Europe’s largest Monasteries, the Benedictine Abbey. The Abbey has a library with over 80,000 books, and 2,000 manuscripts. We then cruised through the scenic Wachau Valley passing Castles, Cathedrals, and mountainside vineyards. This was a highlight of our trip. That evening after arriving in Vienna we attended a Viennese Waltz Concert that showcased opera singers, ballet dancers and professional musicians.

The following morning we toured the Hofburg Imperial Palace complex with the Vienna Boys Choir and Lipizzaner Stallions, and the magnificent St Stephen’s Cathedral. That afternoon we left Vienna and cruised to our final destination, Budapest.

Our arrival into Budapest was awe-inspiring with it’s 8 bridges dividing Buda and Pest. Our guided tour took us to Fisherman’s Bastion, a fortress on the Buda side of the river, overlooking all of Budapest. The view was breathtaking. As we continued our tour we viewed the Chain Bridge, the memorial “Shoes on the Danube Bank”, and Heroes’ Square. We ended our stay with a trip to the Great Market Mall.

This trip was an amazing experience, and one that we would recommend to anyone who enjoys the history, culture, and beauty of Europe.
